This is the last project I've been working on in collaboration with the Austrian artist and friend Mira Loew. It's a video art piece that we have submitted to the Tricky Women Film Festival in Vienna. We haven't uploaded it to the Internet yet so here there are a couple of still images and the synopsis:
"Übersetztung Perdida/ Fehlende Traducción" ("Missing Translation") engages with the experience of solitude and isolation in the era of mass communication and mass media. The film does not follow a narrative as such, but focuses on expressing an emotional state.
The two languages used in the video, German and Spanish are the native languages of the two directresses, respectively. English- a foreign language to both artists formed the basis of their communication. In the collaborative process ideas and concepts, poetry and emotional expressions had to be translated from German to English to Spanish and back again.
The interferences represented in the video symbolize errors in our ways of communication- they might be language problems, technical problems of communication media or personal issues that meet a lack of comprehension in our surrounding. These "dysfunctions" create a space in which we experience ourselves as disconnected and lonely, allowing us to be more conscious of our true identities beyond the means of performance and pretense. We believe that solitude is a crucial part of human nature and suffers a lack of representation in our contemporary society and we seek to re-introduce to our self-awareness.
The technique of time-lapse animation in combination with the human body creates a visual sense of interference and disruption. In quiet parts it makes the vital functions of the human body, particularly breathing visible. This enables the viewer to understand the human body merely as a living organism, without a cultural identity, barely distinguishable from one another. Another aspect of this way of time-lapse animation is the physically intense performative process of shooting.
